A while ago, Facebook in what we would like to call an attempt to compete with Snapchat, released an update bringing the new WhatsApp Status, which is basically a version of Snapchat stories, but with the addition of full encryption. It was fun at first, until users realized they could no longer use WhatsApp text status which was previously available.
After receiving user feedback, WhatsApp has re-introduced the old text status. The recent image/video based status won’t be removed, but users would have both options available. In a statement to TechCrunch, WhatsApp said:
“We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a persistent text-only update in their profile, so we’ve integrated this feature into the ‘About’ section in profile settings. Now, the update will appear next to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or looking at Group info.”
The re-introduced WhatsApp Status allow users update their text-only status—“can’t talk”, “busy”, “Available” etc, or any other customized text by tapping onto ‘Settings,’ which further divides into sub-sections including ‘Profile photo’, ‘Phone number’ and ‘About.’
Locating the feature is quite easy:
- From the menu at the top right corner, tap on settings
- then tap on your profile
- from the about and phone number section, you can edit your status.
The old whatsapp text status doesn’t disappear after 24 hours like the video status.
The text-only status was first rolled-back on android, but it’s now available on other platforms, including iOS and Windows. The old WhatsApp status option can be gotten by upgrading to the latest version on the app store.
